Abstract:

This essay provides a detailed comparison of Josephus' version, in Ant. 6.86-94, of Samuel's Farewell Discourse with its biblical source, i.e. 1 Samuel 12 (as represented by MT, LXX, and Targum Jonathan). Specific questions addressed by the investigation include: the text-form(s) of 1 Samuel 12 used by Josephus, the rewriting techniques applied by him to the data of the source, the distinctive features of Josephus' version of the discourse as compared with that of the Vorlage, and the particular messages the Josephan rendering might have been intended to convey to Ant's double audience, i.e. cultivated Gentiles and fellow Jews.
