Abstract:

Among the early versions of Tobit 13 one of the Syriac witnesses (= S2) stands out for its notably shorter and frequently divergent text. In 1957, this evidence led Lebram to suggest that the Vorlage of S2 might be the source of all subsequent versions of this chapter of Tobit. After a history of research on the issue, this study identifies S2’s Vorlage for Tobit 13 on the basis of a comparative analysis. S2 is a derivative translation tending to shorten and harmonize an earlier, today unknown Greek text.
