Poligamia in Ben Sira?
Permitted by the Mosaic Law, polygamy is present in many Old Testament stories, even if one should speak of polygny rather than of polygamy. In fact, in all cases there is a man with two or more wives. Also present in the Second Temple period, polgamy is seen in a negative light in some sectors of Judaism, for example, at Qumran.
Ben Sira, for his part, addresses the issue indirectly just as he does with question of divorce. Scattered throughout the book there are some indications about the problems that polygamy entails in the home, especially for the husband. In my contribution I will consider two main passages, in which the sage refers explicitly to rivarlry between wives (Sir 37:11; 26:5-6) and discuss some ambiguous texts (Sir 7:26; 25:8b; 25:14; 28:15).
My conclusion is that Ben Sira's text seems to reflect a practice common at the time, i.e. not the polygamous but the bigamist marriage.
