Abstract:

G. N. Stanton's hypothesis that 5 Ezra should be interpreted as a part of the JewishChristian reception of the Gospel of Matthew in the aftermath of the Bar-Kokhba-revolt is still widely accepted. This article argues that 5 Ezra is better understood in its relation to earlier Ezra materials. 5 Ezra is a radically anti-Jewish, Christian supersessionist reinterpretation of the canonical books of Ezra and Nehemia as well as the Jewish apocalypse called 4 Ezra.
