Abstract:

Schultz describes various theories about who lived at Qumran. These include archaeological ruins and according to whether or not one believes that an intimate connection exists between the scrolls. He notes that Qumran was a villa rustica of a wealthy landowner, it was an agricultural estate, a balsam production center, a pottery factory, or perhaps a commercial entrepot for Dead Sea traffic. He states that scholar Roland de Vaux believed that the Dead Sea Scrolls and the ruins did in fact reflect a single community while E.L. Sukenik believed that they were the Essences.
