The Additions to Ben Sira and the Book’s Multiform Textual Witness
In the first part, Gile evaluates the consensus theory on the origin of the additions by considering the relationship between the additions among the different textual witnesses. Secondly, he reflects on the alleged thematic coherence of the additions and its relevance for establishing the origin of the additions. He argued for the multiformity of the text of Ben Sira. Instead of two distinct text-forms underlying the extant textual witnesses, the transmission and growth of the book seems to be much more complex and should dictate that we can not speak of a unified revision of Ben Sira that accounts for all of the additions.
