Des mercenaires 'rhodiens' dans la Judée hasmonéenne? Étude du motif floral de monnaies de Jean Hyrcan et Alexandre Jannée
This paper deals with three Hasmonean series of coins: two issued by John Hyrcanus and one by his son Alexander Jannaeus. The comparison with a Rhodian type allows us to identify the flower appearing on these coins as a rose and not a lily as has usually been assumed by scholars. This innovation appears to be of historical significance, for it was introduced when each of both Hasmonean rulers decided to hire mercenaries. This fact is linked with the issue of pseudo-Rhodian coins, in continental Greece, known as “mercenaries currency”.
