Abstract:

In this mainly methodological paper, the author sustains the validity of using ancient rabbinic litterature for historical studies of Jewish society in the Second Temple period. He refutes Jacob Neusner's arguments and method, in spite of the ascendancy they enjoy in scholarship. He also underlines the dissonance between the theoritical difficulties or impossibilities raised by German historians and philologists (Peter Schäfer et al.) and their own work and research.
