מערות המפלט מתקופת מרד בר כוכבא במרחב שבין עין גדי לחורבת קומראן לאור המחקר המחודש במדבר יהודה

During the course of the renewed research project of the Judean Desert, during the years 2001 –2006, more than ten Bar Kokhba period refuge caves that were previously unknown were discovered in the cliffy area that runs between Ein Gedi and Qumran. The general fieldwork of this project included the systematic multidisciplinary survey of over 400 caves which were then plotted and described in detail. Geological data was collected along with zoological and botanical data which easily provide a rich basis for several diverse studies. A thorough archaeological survey was conducted in all of the 400 caves while archaeological excavations were carried out in selected few caves which produced artifacts from different periods. Artifacts found in the caves from the Bar Kokhba period include numerous coins, some of which are directly dated to the Bar Kokhba Revolt, an assortment of weapons, metal, pottery, glass, and stone objects, organic finds such as woven textiles, food remains, wood and bone objects as well as written documents in Greek on papyrus and fragments of a Biblical scroll. Archaeological evidence shows that the rebels fleeing the Roman forces found refuge in the numerous caves found throughout the entire eastern area of Judea and in particular those caves located densely along the cliffs that extend from Ein Gedi to Jericho. Essentially most caves are characterized as remote from any settlements, and for the most part hardly accessible. However, it appears that at times more easily reachable smaller caves located closer to settlements were also used. The geographical distribution and the character of the caves prove that during the Bar Kokhba revolt and until the arrival of the Roman forces to depress the revolt the rebels were in control of the Judean Desert region and the western coast of the Dead Sea.

במהלך המחקר שנערך על ידינו בשנים 2006-2001 מדבר יהודה, באזור המצוקי שבין עין גדי לקומראן, נתגלו ממצאיםארכיאולוגים רבים מתקופת מרד בר כוכבא בלמעלה מעשר מערות מפלט שלא הוכרו לפני המחקר הנוכחי. עבודת השטחבמחקר זה כללה סקר מערות שיטתי ורב תחומי, שבמהלכו מופו ותוארו על-ידינו על 400 מערות, אשר בחלקן נתגלו ממצאים מגוונים, בהם ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים מתקופות שונות, כמו גם ממצאים גיאולוגיים, זואולוגיים ובוטאניים המהווים כר פורה למחקרים שונים. במערות שנמצאו בוצע סקר ארכיאולוגי מדוקדק, וכן חפירות במערות נבחרות. השרידים מתקופת מרד בר-כוכבא שנמצאו במחקר הנוכחי כוללים מטבעות מרד רבים ומטבעות נוספים; כלי נשק וכלי מתכת שונים; כלי חרס , זכוכית ואבן; ממצאים אורגאניים הכוללים אריגים, שרידי מזון וכלי עץ ועצם, וכן תעודות כתובות ביוונית על פפירוס וקטעים ממגילה מקראית . מחקר זה מראה כי בסופו של מרד בר כוכבא ברחו פליטים אל מערות רבות המצויות בצפיפות בכל מצוקי האזור שבין עין גדי ליריחו, וכפי הנראה בכל מזרחה של ארץ יהודה. על פי רוב היו אלה מערות גדולות, רחוקות מהיישוב וקשות לגישה. עם זאת השתמשו גם במערות קטנות, לעיתים קלות לגישה וסמוכות ליישוב. מתוך פריסתן הגיאוגרפית של המערות ואופיין עולה כי במהלך מרד בר כוכבא ועד לשלב הגעת הכוחות הרומאים לדיכוי המרד, הייתה השליטה במדבר יהודה וברצועת החוף המערבי של ים המלח בידי המורדים .
