Abstract:

The report of I Makk 1 and Flavius Josephus (Ant. 12.248-250) about the plundering of the Jerusalem temple by Antiochus Epiphanes throws light, by the reference to plundered "secret treasures," on the interpretation of Isa 45, 3a. The allusion may be to different kinds of treasures in palaces, temples or tombs which were not accessible to the public.
