Abstract:

A few years ago this author raised the possibility that, as in the biblical period, there was a temple in the city of Samaria in the fourth century BCE (.Zion, 56 [1991], pp. 129-134). This possibility, then based on literary and numismatic evidence, may now be supported by newly-released epigraphic evidence: Papyrus Wadi ed-Daliyeh 14, ascribed by its editors to the 330s, documents the sale of a נשכה in Samaria. This term, which appears in the Book of Nehemia, in some Qumran documents and in a Nabatean inscription, always denotes a chamber in a temple. The same is usually true regarding its better-known cognate . לשכה
