While symposia of philosophers are a well-known topic of Plato, Xenophon, Plutarch, Athenaeus et al., teaching philosophy at table is criticized because symposiasts should treat each voice equally, but music has a manipulative power. Likewise Sir 31:1‒13 warns the wise of teaching at table. Nevertheless, in line with his successor, Philo of Alexandria, Sirach recommends music to be shared by all banqueters.
