Abstract:

It is admitted that the formation of the Pentateuch has been a lengthy process, somewhat connected to the long Biblical chronology. However, we cannot isolate any part that could have had at any time an independent authority. A paradigm is put forward, that the whole work has been finalized in Egypt in the 3rd cent. BC. This involves two main pillars: first, a reassessment of the origin of the Gerizim Samaritans, who never had any significant diaspora; second, an examination of Letter of Aristeas, which, besides the translation problem, hints at the editing of a suitable text.
