Abstract:

The paper deals with prayer in the Letter of James, in particular with Jas 5:13-18. “James” is handed down only in the New Testament, but a number of scholars regard the document as an ancient Jewish text (diaspora letter). The religious classification is still debated. In any case scholarship on Second Temple Judaism will profit from a re-reading of “James” as a text whose affiliation remains in the twilight zone between Judaism and early Christianity. The Letter of James thus may serve as a source for the study of prayer in Second Temple Judaism that has been quite overlooked until now.
