Abstract:

It is a matter of debate whether Bilha’s drunkenness in TestRub 3,13 is to be seen as an excuse for her being naked or as a form of misbehavior. The present article seeks to solve this problem by showing that the author of TestRub modeled his account of Gen 35,22a after Early Jewish and Rabbinic traditions concerning the story of Noah in the vineyard (Gen 9,20–27). It is argued that the parallels between the two stories and ancient traditions about Noah’s drunkenness and nakedness, where Noah’s conduct is often considered negatively, suggest that Bilha’s behavior in TestRub 3,11–15 is to be considered negatively as well.
