Abstract:

At 2 Esd 12,12 (Neh 2,12), main text of Hanhart’s critical edition of 2 Esdras has Ἰσραήλ equivalent to לירושׁלם. There are various possible explanations for this. The author introduces a possibility not previously considered, that the form Ἰσραήλ is due to the influence of nomina sacra on Greek textual transmission.
