Abstract:

In scroll 4Q448 there are three small columns. There can be no doubt that columns B and C belong to the same composition, but it is not clear whether the upper and lower columns belong to the same work. In the upper part of the manuscript there is a psalm, part of which was known from Psalm 154. This psalm, which was previously known only from the Syriac manuscript, is one of five Syriac apocryphal psalms, and it also appears in 11QPsa. Though the remnants of Psalm 154 that were preserved in 4Q448 are fragmentary, they allow us to suggest three corrections for the Hebrew Vorlage of Psalm 154. The prayer written on the lower part of 4Q448 is fragmentary as well. It opens with some petitions and may possibly end with a prayer of thanks. King Jonathan is mentioned twice in this prayer — at the beginning of column B and at the end of column C. The prayer was probably composed by one of King Jonathan's followers, who composed a prayer for the well-being of King Jonathan and his kingdom. King Jonathan is to be identified with Alexander Jannaeus. We have no explanation of how this prayer found its way to Qumran. We are of the opinion that this scroll was not composed at Qumran but brought to the place by one of the sect members. We believe that 4Q448 was written in the days of Alexander Jannaeus, between 103 and 76 B.C.E., and is of great importance from the palaeographical point of view.
