Abstract:

The publication of texts and artefacts from the Judean Desert in The Schøyen Collection is innovative. The mineral analysis of parchment and artefacts provides new information on how various cave environments set their stamp on the scrolls, and demonstrates advanced techniques in the preparation of parchment in ancient Judea. The analysis casts light on the relation between the Qumran settlement and Judean society at large. Biblical fragments provide material for textual criticism, and illuminate the process of literary development of texts such as the Book of Jeremiah. Advanced photographic methods and the use of Photoshop enable more precise and reader-friendly editions of ancient texts, including a more precise palaeographical analysis.
