Abstract:

The article deals with the interrelationship between phonetic phenomena and the written transmission of ancient texts. It deals primarily with (a) sandhi, assimilation and open juncture as an explanation for readings or variants in the Bible and rabbinic literature; and (b) glides that are reflected in readings of words in biblical verses. These readings were sometimes subject to hyper-correction when transmitted by copyists. The text of 1 Sam 2:27-29 is discussed extensively, in light of the reading of a Qumran fragment of the biblical text, the Septuagint, and an allusion to it in the Serekh.
