The paper gives a short introduction into the life and works of Philo of Alexandria, an overview of classical theories about metaphors and allegory (Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian) and a classification of single metaphors in the writings of Philo. The focus lies on Philo‘s allegorical exegesis of biblical scriptures and on his use of metaphors in theology, cosmology, politics, anthropology and ethics.
