Abstract:

The text of 2 Maccabees offers a rich language and its literary style shows parallels to Hellenistic historiography. Therefore it has often been compared to the work of Polybios. Interestingly, only a few examples of innovative metaphors can be found in the text. Among these the metaphors in 2 Macc 2:27–29 and 15:39 play a very important role: They help us to understand 2 Maccabees as an example of Jewish historiography that on the one hand vehemently turns against the Hellenisation of Judaism and on the other hand participates in the literary world of Hellenism.
