Abstract:

The metaphors contained in the ToIn the Book of Tobit, Hannah and Tobit employ metaphorical epithets to refer to their son Tobias. This essay examines the metaphors “staff of our hand” and “light of my eyes” as they reflect the varying perceptions of Tobit and Hannah regarding the significance and role of their son while they are away from the homeland. The senses and meanings that these metaphors map on to the persona
of Tobias act as aids in the construction of his character in the narrative.
