A comparative analysis of 47 active-passive variants between the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa) and the Masoretic Text (MT) suggests that variations in the scroll, where passive clauses appear as active, are often the result of cognitive constraints in working memory during textual transmission rather than strictly diachronic linguistic shifts. Integrating philological and psycholinguistic approaches, the study argues that these shifts are spontaneous, non-systematic, and expected in handwritten, non-canonized texts.
