An Analysis of the Codicological Features of the Qumran Cave 11Q Manuscripts

This article presents analysis and discussion of the codicological features of the scrolls from Cave 11Q. Through a focus on the dimensions and layout of the manuscripts, I ask whether there are noticeable patterns or recurring features which characterise them collectively. I observe that a majority of the preserved scrolls are taller than average and bear long compositions, indicating a well-funded group of scrolls and possibly reflecting an increase in the production of taller scrolls in the Herodian period. I also identify shared characteristics among discrete groups of scrolls from Cave 11Q, which may speak to the practices of schools of professional scribes. Despite these trends and shared characteristics, this study also demonstrates considerable diversity in the codicological features of the Cave 11Q scrolls.
