Abstract

The Hymn to the Creator appended to Pss 149, 150 in the Qumran scroll has seemingly original material in only three lines (4-6). J.A.Sanders found Hymn 5b alluded to in 1Q Hodayot 13,10-11. Though Book of Jubilees ii, 2-3 is now known in full only from Ethiopic, it is demonstrable that this late 2d century B.C. Essene composition quotes Hymn 4b and adapts 4a, 5a. The Hymn was thus already a familiar liturgical text when Jubilees was written; this argues for an early date for the Qumran Psalter groupings generally. The angelology of these texts is strikingly different from that of Ben Sira.
