The Hasmonean state and its short history are an important stage in the annals of the Jewish People throughout the ages, and also in the history of Christianity. This was the only period of Jewish sovereignty since the destruction of the First Temple until the establishment of the State of Israel, an era lasting about 2500 years. Under the Hasmoneans, the borders of the Jewish Land of Israel were drawn anew as they remained in the collective historical consciousness of the Jews.
