Abstract:

Phinehas appears firstly in the bloody episode at Baal of Peor (Num 25). Beyond the original meaning of this biblical narrative, how this character, quoted sixteen times in the OT, did become a priestly pattern (or counter-pattern)? In connection with him, the author revisits the pre-talmudic evidence in texts the date of which is fairly established. Without giving a definitive answer, he asks himself about the aggada as a source for understanding ancient Jewish and Christian history and historiography.
